Chapter Twenty-Six
A loud snore woke Cade.
Blinking his eyes sleepily, he tried to get up but quickly noticed the foot laying over his chest. Leaning up on his elbows, he looked down at the owner of the leg.
They had each been given a room but chose to stay in Cadeâs last night. After the time spent apart, they didnât want to leave each otherâs sight.
Lia lay with her head on the opposite end of the bed, her thick hair draped over her face, mouth open, snoring loud enough to wake the palace. Cade couldnât contain his smile.
Lia had walked for almost two weeks through the forest with his little brother to get to him. Then on arrival, she managed to convince Deianira, Queen of The Dome, to let his brother walk free.
She was truly amazing.
A noise from the bathroom drew Cadeâs attention from Lia.
Cassian.
He hadnât managed to talk to his brother much since his arrival and felt like there was so much more to be said.
Removing her leg as carefully as possible, so as not to wake her, Cade rolled off the bed and headed to the bathroom.
As he opened the door, Cassianâs head turned to him from where heâd been standing at the sink. He wore the same plain black shirt and trousers that they were all given when assigned their rooms.
Cade held his fingers to his lips until he closed the door behind himself.
âAre you okay?â Cade started.
âYeah,â was all Cassian said.
Cade watched his brother. He wasnât doing anything. Just standing in front of the mirror. He looked pained.
âThank you,â Cade whispered. âFor keeping her safe.â
Cassian snorted.
âIt was the other way around.â As soon as the words left his lips, the smile slowly slid off his face. âThe word âsorryâ doesnât seem to cover it,â he said quietly.
Cadeâs brows lowered in confusion.
âFor what?â
Cassian seemed just as confused now. âAre you serious, Cade?â When Cade only cocked his head at him, he carried on. âYouâre here because of me. You were minding your business and I dragged you into this shit-â
âYou didnât ask me to do that.â Cade cut him off. âAnd Iâm here because I didnât mind my business.â He laughed quietly before sobering. âI spoke up. That was my decision, and Iâd do it again,â he said earnestly.
âBut I didnât say anything either.â Cassian shook his head. âI shouldâve.â
âSo we could both get locked up? âCause that wouldâve been real smart.â
Lowering his voice, Cade started again. âMy point is, you donât need to ask me to protect you. I would do it anyway. And as you can see, Iâm very much alive so you donât need to be sorry either.â
Cassianâs eyes glistened as he met Cadeâs.
A knock at the door had them both turning.
âOnce you guys are done kissing and making up, we need to talk!â Lia called through the door.
Cade huffed a laugh and shook his head.
